Pakistan is 6th most populous country in the world with a population of 188 Million. 33 percent of this vast population constitutes adolescents who lack basic information and knowledge regarding their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. The role of young people has not only become important but vital for Pakistan’s future development and sustainability of SRHR project.
Access, Services and Knowledge (ASK), is a project that intends to create an enabling environment for young people to access Youth Friendly Health Facilities without discrimination, judgment and fear.
Under ASK project, Rutgers WPF, Pakistan has planned a two day Youth ASK Leadership Conclave (YALC) to unite young people to empower them with leadership skills to undertake initiatives in their community on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. These young people were selected to participate in the YALC based on their determination and will to further the SRHR agenda in their respective communities.
The two day Youth ASK Leadership Conclave will use a youth led multi-pronged strategy for enhancing their leadership capabilities. During the first stage of activities participants will be informed on sexual and reproductive health & rights, millennium development goals and International conference on population development agenda. The capacity building sessions would be on:
- Leadership, community engagement and communication
- Building alliance for SRHR policy advocacy
- Meaningful youth participation
- Building strategic partnerships
Through high energy plenary sessions, intergeneration dialogues and intellectual discussions the young participants will be inspired to take action. They will be provided with opportunities to discuss local issues prevailing in their communities and seek answers and clarifications from SRHR champions.
The Conclave will serve as a dissemination platform for the exchange of ideas by young leaders in SRHR to their younger counterparts, to build their capacity and empower them with the leadership qualities essential in spearheading the cause of SRHR in their communities. The Conclave will also provide networking opportunities for these young professionals for enhanced collaboration and alliance purposes.
The participants will further support in achieving and realization of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for young people, women and marginalized groups. These young SRHR leaders will also become the face of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights initiatives at various national and international conferences and events. These participants will be responsible to undertake initiatives on:
- Zero tolerance for domestic violence
- Eradication of child marriages
- Enabling environment for young people to access youth friendly health services
- Institutionalization of Life Skills based Education
To familiarize participants with sources that provide easier access to information in the era of technology, an E & M health conference has also been designed on emerging technologies and trends.
Towards the end of the two day conclave the Young SRHR Leaders will develop a YOUNG SRHR LEADERS DECLARATION. The document prepared will declare young people’s commitments towards the thematic areas of SRHR such as Domestic Violence, Child Marriages, Life Skills based Education and Youth Friendly Health Services.
