Recently nominated as the International Health Professional of the Year
2007 by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, Dr Sania
Nishtar is known best for her cutting edge contributions to health
policy and planning.
Sania Nishtar graduated from Khyber Medical College in 1986
as the best graduate of the year, with 16 gold medals – a college record, which
remains intact to date. After 10 years of being a housewife and a mother, she
resumed her professional life in 1996. Since then she has moved swiftly on two
fronts – professionally within Pakistan and within the global health
community in addition to obtaining the two highest equalizations in the
field – Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and a Ph.D from Kings
College, London.
Within
Pakistan, she
worked briefly as a cardiologist and then left a lucrative career as a
cardiologist to set up the NGO think tank
Heartfile
►, which today is the most powerful health policy voice in
Pakistan and is valued as a model for replication in other developing countries.
As the founder president of the NGO, she contributes a significant amount of her
time voluntarily, on a pro bono basis, to catalyze change and institutionalize
innovative solutions to improve Pakistan’s health systems. Her main focus is on
health and social policy reform

Sania
