Sania outlines measures to address tokenism in policymaking at 2020 WLGH Conference

October 13, 2020 – Washington: At the 2020 Women Leaders in Global Health Conference (WLGH), SAPM Dr. Sania Nishtar was invited to join the high-level plenary panel, ‘Making Policy with a Gender Lens – Spotlight on South Asia’. The panel brought together some of the most powerful women in South Asia’s public sector to explore how gender influences their work, how they have helped advance the equality agenda, and what having women at the decision-making tables means for people’s health and wellbeing across the region. Leading the panel discussion, Dr. Nishtar outlined measures to address tokenism in policymaking. She emphasized on the power of data disaggregation by gender and its use for accountability. Alongside Dr. Nishtar, the panel included Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP Speaker from Bangladesh Parliament, Suraya Dalil, Director Special Programme on Primary Health Care from World Health Organization and Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director for South-East Asia from World Health Organization.
