Heartfile Conducts Second Tobacco Awareness Session for Adolescents

Islamabad | January 22, 2025 – Continuing its series of health talks, Heartfile conducted its second Tobacco Awareness Session at the Superior Group of Colleges, Chak Shahzad Campus, to educate adolescents on the dangers of smokeless tobacco (SLT) and promote informed lifestyle choices. The first session in the series was held on October 22, 2024, at a private school in Islamabad.

Over 50 students from the 12th grade, along with three faculty and staff members, participated in the interactive session, which included expert-led discussion, a Q&A segment, and educational health talks. Heartfile also donated printed awareness materials to the college library to further support tobacco education efforts.

These initiatives play a crucial role in equipping young individuals with the knowledge to make healthier decisions and contribute to a tobacco-free future.

Heartfile Completes Consultations on Smokeless Tobacco Position Paper

Heartfile has successfully concluded a series of consultations aimed at developing a comprehensive position paper on smokeless tobacco. The paper seeks to solidify stakeholders’ collective stance on the regulation and control of smokeless tobacco products in Pakistan.

This initiative underscores Heartfile’s commitment to fostering consensus-driven solutions that address critical gaps in tobacco control policies, aligning with global best practices to safeguard public health.

December 11th, 2024: Multi stakeholder Consultation held at Heartfile.

Heartfile convened a partner consultation meeting to review the draft of the Tobacco Control Law (TCL) monitoring tool currently under development. The meeting brought together representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs) and tobacco control experts, who provided valuable insights and recommendations for the tool’s refinement.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards strengthening monitoring mechanisms and ensuring effective compliance with TCLs in Pakistan

Heartfile Initiates Consultations on TCLs Compliance Monitoring Tool

Heartfile has successfully developed a zero draft of the Tobacco Control Laws (TCLs) compliance monitoring tool as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen tobacco control measures. The draft tool aims to provide a comprehensive framework for monitoring compliance with TCLs across Pakistan.

Consultations with key tobacco control partners have been initiated to refine and enhance the tool, ensuring its effectiveness and alignment with on-ground realities. These collaborative discussions mark a significant step towards advancing tobacco control efforts and improving compliance monitoring mechanisms in the country.

July 29th, 2024: Emergency Meeting Convened by Heartfile to Address Government Actions on Tobacco Control

Heartfile convened an emergency meeting of the Alliance for Tobacco & Nicotine Control (ATNiC) to address recent government measures concerning cigarette kiddie packs and amendments to SRO 863(I)/2010. Held at Heartfile, the meeting brought together civil society stakeholders to strategize a unified response.

It was unanimously agreed that a collaborative response would be developed and shared with the Federal Secretary of Health. Heartfile was tasked with drafting a comprehensive response, which was further refined following a follow-up meeting to incorporate additional inputs.

On August 1st, the finalized response was submitted to the Federal Secretary of MoNHSR&C. Additionally, individual responses were submitted by SAMAR, 25 CTC-Pak partners, and ABP, underscoring a collective commitment to strengthening tobacco control efforts.

September 23rd, 2024: ATNiC Holds First Roundtable Meeting

The first roundtable meeting of the Alliance for Tobacco & Nicotine Control (ATNiC) took place on September 23, 2024. Esteemed members convened to review and provide valuable input on the Position Papers currently under development at Heartfile.

The session also included a comprehensive review of the SLT IEC materials prepared by Heartfile for the upcoming Smokeless Tobacco (SLT) awareness campaign. In addition, participants engaged in a productive discussion on advancing Tobacco Control efforts, reflecting ATNiC’s commitment to reducing tobacco and nicotine harm in Pakistan.

October 22nd, 2024: Tobacco and Health Awareness Talk by Heartfile at Aspire Grammar School Islamabad:

On October 22nd, 2024, Heartfile conducted an awareness talk at Aspire Grammar School, Chak Shahzad Campus, Islamabad targeting students of classes 8th, 9th, and 10th. The session sensitized 55 students and 4 faculty members and staff on the hazards of tobacco, with a specific focus on smokeless tobacco and oral nicotine pouches. The students actively participated in the interactive session, raising questions to enhance their understanding and expressing appreciation for the initiative.

Heartfile Launches Policy Brief on NTNPs to Guide Policy Action in Pakistan

Following the release of its comprehensive report on New Tobacco and Nicotine Products (NTNPs) in Pakistan, Heartfile has developed an NTNPs Policy Brief. The brief aims to sensitize policymakers to the growing issue of NTNPs in the Pakistani market and outlines a clear course of policy action to address the associated public health risks.

The NTNPs Policy Brief provides evidence-based recommendations to support effective regulation and control measures for these emerging products.

Launch of Heartfile’s Report on status of Tobacco Control Laws Monitoring Report

Heartfile, convened a dissemination event at Margala Hotel Islamabad to disseminate their findings on Status of Tobacco Control Laws (TCLs) compliance in 10 districts of Pakistan. The report aims at assessing the compliance of TCLs with respect to Pakistan’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) commitments and attempts to identify gaps and challenges in TCLs monitoring framework alongside recommendations on how to overcome these gaps.
Prominent figures from various sectors, including government officials, health and tobacco control experts and civil society representatives from all over Pakistan graced the event.

Launch of Heartfile’s Reports on Smokeless Tobacco and New Nicotine Products.

February 06, 2024: Heartfile convened a dissemination event at Serena Hotel Islamabad to unveil their recently generated evidence on Smokeless Tobacco (SLT) and Tobacco and New Nicotine Products (TNNPs) in Pakistan. Eminent parliamentarians Senator Fawzia Arshad and Senator Seemee Ezdi graced the event. It also gathered prominent figures from various sectors, including government officials, health and tobacco control experts and civil society representatives from all over Pakistan.

Dr. Saba Amjad Highlights Urgent Need for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Policies at the 13th International Public Health Conference

Islamabad: Heartfile, in collaboration with Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) and Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), participated at the 13th International Public Health Conference held at HSA Islamabad. The event, featuring a scientific session titled “Tackling Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factors” focused on crucial health issues in Pakistan, brought together a panel of experts from government bodies, civil society organizations, and advocacy groups.

Also together with aforementioned partners, Heartfile setup and maintained presence at a stall inside the event venue for increasing networking and the visibility of Heartfile’s past and present work on NCDs alongside partners’ published materials. Heartfile’s documentary films on ,iTFAs, ENDS and ONPs were screened repeatedly.

Heartfile team actively participated in the scientific session. The session explored both Dietary Risk Factors, including industrially produced trans-fatty acids (iTFAs) and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), and non-Dietary Risk Factor of Tobacco use.
In his keynote address, Dr. Khawaja Masuood Ahmed, National Coordinator for Nutrition & National Fortification Alliance of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination, provided valuable insights into the milestones achieved and challenges faced in Pakistan’s battle against NCDs and appreciated Heartfile’s valuable contributions to the process referring to Heartfile’s iTFA Situational Analysis in Pakistan and National Action Pan for NCDs (NAP-NCD)  for adopting global best practices with regards to iTFAs.

Mr Munawar Hussain, the country coordinator for GHAI in Pakistan, highlighted the NCD dietary risk factor of excessive sugar intake in his talk and demonstrated its linkages with the SSB industry and its products. Mr Munawar presented international best practices at length and the developments thereof particularly the of Front of Pack Labelling (FOPL) policies and standards adopted by various countries.

Mr Sanaullah Ghumman, General Secretary of PANAH gave a detailed chronology of his organization’s direct interactions with parliamentarians to garner political support for NCD related regulations highlighting both the highs and lows of their struggle in this battle.

Dr. Saba Amjad and her team, in their presentation, focused on the non-dietary NCD risk factor of Tobacco. The discussion addressed critical challenges in this domain and presented the latest contextual evidence regarding emerging nicotine-based products, including Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs), and Oral Nicotine Pouches (ONPs) in Pakistan. Their presentation also highlighted the existing gaps in Pakistan’s regulatory framework to address these products and drew from international experiences in combating this emerging threat. Dr. Amjad concluded her address by proposing key policy recommendations and outlining a strategic way forward to effectively tackle the challenges posed by tobacco and related emerging products.

In her closing remarks the chair of the Scientific session Dr Afshan Tahseen Vice president PANAH summed up the discussion and appreciated the work of all organizations. She seconded the speakers’ opinions & policy recommendations and vowed to continue the advocacy work.

Overall, this session provided a pivotal platform for informed discussions, fostering collaboration between experts and stakeholders to strengthen the nation’s efforts in curbing the adverse impact of tobacco on public health and the dietary risk factor of iTFAs and SSBs.

Faux grassroots organizations lobby against e-cigarette regulation, marketing campaigns masquerade as public health initiatives and high-profile sports sponsorships place tobacco product advertising before millions of fans.
